Reflections on Fall and Pick that Voice part 3!

Another season gone, another seasonal post…it’s insane how time just flies, especially at this time of year. Unfortunately, with a busier Christmas than I’m used to, I’ve got just 45 minutes left to begin my 12 Days of Anime series—I have the theme and the first series planned out, but I have to get through this post first!

Thankfully, given the quality of the shows I was following this season, I only need to cover three shows here. And one of them, I’d dearly like to devote an entire blog post to, if only I could!

On stray dogs, co-worker relationships and the wonder of words

Bungou Stray Dogs

As the spring season was drawing down, I have to admit that I was on the fence about Bungou Stray Dogs. The main character’s issues were, to me, not as interesting as Dazai’s past, and it was frustrating that we seemed to be spending so much time on the former. Furthermore, some of the stories were clearly not as well interated into the rest of the show. For example, I’ve heard that the two-parter centered around Kunikida, Sasaki Nobuko and Rokuzou was actually from a separate novel, and I’m not even sure if Atsushi was involved. In any case, the first cour of BSD did not seem to know where it was headed.

That changed with this second cour. The four-parter that started of this season has to be one of the most interesting arcs in the story so far. It started to answer the two questions that most viewers seemed to be interested in: just who is Dazai, and what is he after? BSD may have Atsushi as its primary protagonist, but it’s Dazai that everyone is here for, and it’s mostly with him that it delivers. I’m glad I watched this show through to the end, if only for this wonderfully amusing and yet, complex character (though Igarashi’s wonderful visual eye certainly helped too).

wagnaria-2 wagnaria-1

I’m gonna be short and sweet with this one. To be frank, this was far and away my greatest disappointment all year. In itself, the show probably isn’t too bad—I really enjoyed spotting Japanese souvenirs and other edibles that I love, and I did find a couple of the relationships rather interesting. However, I loved the first animated series (though that manga actually came second) so much that I bought all three seasons of it… But this time, even Yuukyan was not able to get me to ever want to touch this one again, not even with a ten-foot pole. I’m incredibly sorry to part with the WAGNARIA series (NB: I prefer its Japanese name of WORKING!!) on this note, and I hope that in future, I’ll still be able to go back and enjoy the three-season original!

The Great Passage

As I’ve mentioned in a couple of places online, one of my greatest passions is actually language. At the moment, I’ve got a strong fascination with the Japanese language and how I can go about sharing the joy I find in it (and in Japanese media) with an English-speaking audience. So it should be no surprise that The Great Passage [Fune wo Amu] was one of the first shows I added to my Fall watchlist, right after the yearly noitaminA announcement in December 2015. Unfortunately, after a fascinating first half, the show started to slow down a lot for me. If I had to pin a finger on the culprit, I’d have to say it was the sudden, lengthly time-skip. I can’t be certain if parts of the story were trimmed so that it would fit within the 11 episode restrictions of the noitaminA timeslot, but whatever the case, even now, I cannot shake off the feeling that something is missing. I don’t regret watching it…but at the same time, I’m not sure if I’ll be interested in checking out the J-drama or the original novel…
