Translation: Bakemonogatari ED: Kimi no Shiranai Monogatari

I’m actually rather depressed, because the limited edition of this (which is officially released this coming Wednesday), and the Bakemonogatari drama cd that was released a week ago are both sold out at all the major online retailers. The single was ranked #2 on the music charts on amazon.co.jp…*sighs* I guess it’s about time I learned that music sells out a lot faster than DVDs do.

Well, the lyrics are out – probably have been since the full version has been on the airwaves. This is the first song I’ve attempted to translate, and I don’t quite understand some of it, Japanese being rather ambiguous compared to English and all that. But it’s about time I ate, so I’m just going to leave this until I can look around for more clues on the meaning. Aug 12: I think I’m done. I’ve rearranged some of the lines so that the flow makes a little more sense (to me anyway). But if you spot anything (else) wrong, or have any other comments, please feel free to voice them. (^_^)

The story you don’t know
*1

On a day like any other, you suddenly stood up and said: “let’s go star-gazing tonight”

You say good things sometimes, huh? saying that, everyone laughed together.

On the dark street I merrily strolled like a fool,

so as not to be crushed by the loneliness and uncertainly I was carrying.

The night sky that we looked up at from the pitch-black world seemed like it was raining stars.

When was it that I started chasing after you?

Somehow, please, don’t be surprised, listen to these feelings of mine

“There’s Deneb, Altair and Vega”
I remember the Summer Triangle you pointed out, and look up at the sky.
I finally found Orihime-sama (Vega), but where is Hikoboshi-sama (Altair)?
(If it remains) like this, she’s all alone.

You were having so much fun, but right beside you, I wasn’t able to say a thing.

The truth is that I’ve somehow come to understand how you are
Even saying “I’ve been found” doesn’t reach through to you.

I kept telling myself that it’s no use crying.

I was just pretending to be strong- I’m really a coward, pretending that I wasn’t interested,
but the pain in my heart has grown.
Ah…so this is what it’s like, the feeling of falling in love…

What do I want to do? Shall I try saying it? *2
(That’s what my) heart is saying
I want to be by your side (but) reality is cruel

I didn’t say it, I couldn’t say it
Even now I can still remember that summer’s day, those twinkling stars that will never return

Your laughing face too, even your angry face, I loved them both
It’s strange, isn’t it?
I’m fully aware of that.
The secret that you don’t know, the secret that’s mine alone.

As that night passes, the you in my memory keeps pointing (out the stars), (unsuspectingly)*3

*1 – major mistake no. 1 was 君が rather than 君の. 「君の知らない物語」 actually makes interpretation a bit harder! One of my teachers said that “The story you don’t know” is the way she would translate it, and some students said that it has the nuance that this story is one about the “you” person. 「君は/が知らない物語」 implies that the story has nothing to do with the “you” person other than that he/she doesn’t know it. It’s typically used in a more negative context.
*2 – if we take the singer as the speaker, then she could either be saying this to herself, or to the object of her affection (I’m personally more inclined to think she’s saying it to herself)…
*3 – literally “in an innocent/simple-minded voice”, but in the context of this song, I think “unsuspectingly” fits.
