HP: OotP – the good, the bad, and the downright stupid…

Caught a late show last night – it ended at 1am – and wasn’t going to comment at first, but my hair takes an hour to dry, so…my thoughts on Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix lie under the cut….

Firstly, stuff I appreciated:

  • Evanna Lynch, who IS Luna Lovegood…
  • Imelda Staunton – absolutely hated Umbridge, butthat was the whole point…
  • The thestrals, which were suitably ugly…
  • The Patronus scene – very pretty…
  • The smashing of the prophecies…

Stuff I am sad about (but that isn’t necessary for the story, at least not much):

  • Just what is the significance of the Order of the Phoenix, given (as my brother noted) that the film IS MEANT to be about it…
  • The destruction of Cho Chang’s character – granted, I don’t like her, but that was cruel…
  • The CGI/make-up responsible for Grawp was pretty sub-par for something of this century…
  • Tonks losing just about any presence she had…real presence, that is…
  • The loss of the Harry/Ginny hints…the little details make all the difference…
  • The loss of Bill Weasley…
  • The loss of the the two-way mirrors – JK has said that they’ll be important, so this might be moved below tomorrow…
  • The fountain of magical brethren not coming to life…
  • Losing the reception committee at the end…

What the…?

  • Lupin not being in the Advance Guard…yeah, Harry definitely trusts Mad-Eye Moody…
  • Even though it involved the spilling of a very private memory, improvement in Occlumency being the reason for Harry to be kicked out?
  • The fireworks being released during the O.W.L.S? The twins aren’t THAT inconsiderate.
  • The greatly reduced explanations (i.e. the scene where Dumbledore supposedly tells Harry “everything”). Only people who’ve read the book are likely to understand the film.

edit: (Before I go off for my diving course, after which I will be reading) the point of having something to live for is a very important thing to note.
There are a few things I’ve probably forgotten about, but it’s half-2…I’m off to bed. Won’t be back online til I’ve read the book methinks. [info]

fernwithy has a much more extensive and critical look at the film…
